Teaching and research hunting ground

In addition to our research in the field of hunting and wildlife management, we offer students the opportunity to learn about and actively participate in practical hunting activities on selected areas of the Lower Saxony State Forests. These areas are available to our department as a teaching and research hunting ground and are located in close proximity to the Faculty of Forestry – easily accessible on foot or even by bicycle.

Our hunting practice is guided by both silvicultural and wildlife biology principles. The focus is on browsing ungulate species, with particular emphasis on ecologically meaningful wildlife management measures – such as the targeted reduction of hunting periods to minimize disturbance in the habitat. The hunting is supervised by our department, while the practical execution is carried out independently by the students. All forestry students with an interest in hunting and a valid hunting license are eligible to participate.

In addition to practical hunting, we also study the occurrence and impact of ungulates. In close coordination with the forestry office, we use these areas for a variety of surveys and investigations. Over the past years, various methods have enabled us to gain a comprehensive understanding of wildlife populations in our hunting ground. These areas also provide an exciting data basis for potential thesis projects.
Above you can see a small selection of wildlife camera footage from our hunting ground. As shown, a wide range of wildlife species appear in the area and are captured by the cameras at all times of day and night. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Dr. Maximilian Hohm or Jörg Berger.
