Digital badges at the University of Göttingen

What are digital badges?

Digital badges are digital proofs of competence. They facilitate the documentation and visibility of engagement and achievements for which no ECTS credits are awarded, thus complementing curricular courses. Badges are verifiable online and can be shared on social media or used in application processes. Further general information can be found in this video

Digital badges at the University of Göttingen

At the University of Göttingen, badges are awarded in six competence areas:

  • Digitalisation
  • Diversity
  • Internationalisation
  • Research-oriented teaching and learning
  • Sustainability
  • Transfer and Engagement

Here you will shortly find an overview of all digital badges of the University of Göttingen.

For students: A digital badge! What can I do with it?

You can use digital badges in social media to show potential employers, for example, what knowledge and skills you have acquired in addition to your studies at the university. You can find instructions on how to add your badges to your LinkedIn or XING profile here.

For teachers: I would like to award a digital badge for my learning offer. What do I have to do?

In this section you will find out which requirements your learning offer must fulfil in order to be eligible for awarding a digital badge and how you can set up a badge.

Awarding a digital badge is a good idea if students or participants have worked more intensively on a certain area of competence and have not (or cannot) acquire credits for it. The digital badge documents the additional competences acquired in areas that are characteristic of teaching and learning at the University of Göttingen for future employers and can thus be useful for starting a career:

  • Digitalisation
  • Diversity
  • Internationalisation
  • Research-oriented teaching and learning
  • Sustainability
  • Transfer and Engagement

In addition, digital badges are intended to provide incentives for self-directed learning.

Digital badges target students and teachers at the University of Göttingen and its partner universities.

For the digital badge to be awarded, learners must attend at least one course or event. Possible course and event types include: Workshops, Conferences, Self-study courses. Provided specific conditions, a badge may also be issued for the participation in Summer Schools or Virtual Exchanges.

To be awarded a digital badge, students take an examination or document their competence development. Possible examinations are, for example, a reflection portfolio, an (online) written examination, etc.

The digital badge is provided and awarded via the platform Open Badge Factory (OBF), which complies with the university’s data protection guidelines. Participants can download their digital badge there after the event and may integrate it into their online profiles.
