Lecture: Quantum transport in nanoscopic systems
Time: Thursday 14 – 16 , SR 5
This introductory lecture will give an introduction into the fascinating field of quantum charge transport at the nanoscale. We will discuss electronic effects in nanoscale systems and cover the following topics:
  • Fabrication of nanostructures
  • Semiconductor basics, field-effect transistor
  • Coulomb blockade, quantum dots
  • Landauer Büttiker formalism (transport in one-dimension)
  • Quantum Hall effect
An ideal addition to this lecture is the seminar on “Nanoscale quantum transport”.

Seminar: Nanoscale quantum transport
Time: Monday 16 – 18, SR 5
In the seminar we will discuss seminal ; that have contributed to our understanding on quantum transport at the nanoscale and cover topics ranging from coulomb blockade, transport in one dimension, quantum Hall effects, measurement of nanoscale transport etc. You will read through publications and present them in a 45 min presentation.
An ideal addition to this seminar is the lecture “Quantum transport in nanoscopic systems”.

This lecture will give a detailed insight on advanced topics of quantum condensed matter physics and how to experimentally measure quantum matter. The following topics will be discussed:
  • Quantum Hall effects (fractional, anomalous, …)
  • Topological insulators
  • Charge density waves
  • Mott insulators
  • Symmetry breaking
