Inhalt:
Since the 'cultural turn' of the 1980s, non-textual sources have become important in all areas of historical scholarship. This workshop aims to introduce some of the main sources and approaches to their interpretation used by historians.
We will take a broad view of 'material culture' as incorporating a wide range of material artefacts (e.g. textiles, metal- and earthenware, furniture, militaria) and even textual sources that have been analysed using cultural methodologies (such as 'cheap print', ephemera, and trade cards). The use of these sources in historical studies necessitates borrowing approaches from anthropology, archaeology, ethnography, and art history (etc.). We will explore how historians have used these materials, what problems and challenges they have encountered, and how these might be resolved.
This one-day workshop incorporates a visit to the Städtisches Museum in Göttingen, where participants will have the chance to put what they have learned into practice.
