Dr. Jelka Günther

Dr. Jelka Günther assisted the regional study of Southeast Asia, with a special focus on mainland Southeast Asia. For her PhD project 'Nostalgia and tourism mobilities in Thailand: An ethnography of urban-rural relations between Bangkok and the Isan' (working title) she conducted 12 months of fieldwork in a small town in Northeastern Thailand. She explored how domestic tourism and lifestyle migration are embedded in powerful discourses of urban-rural relations in contemporary Thailand. Thematically she is interested in anthropological approaches to mobilities, nostalgia and cultural heritage as well as urban-rural-relations.
