Saint Michael`s: an initiative to counter hunger among us

Hunger or malnourishment is no longer just a problem of third world countries: even in our vicinity, in Germany, a hot meal a day is no longer self-evident for many people. Hunger affects the unemployed and (physically) handicapped just as much as the retired and single parents of this society, and even though there are no official statistics concerning empty stomachs in Germany, food banks, churches, and other charitable organisations more and more often report about the growing numbers of the needy.

The catholic St. Michael church goes a step further than bringing the problem under attention: every day at noon - even on holidays and in the weekend - already for more than 25 years it provides a lunch for those who in need, right in the centre of Göttingen. For a small fee one can get a decent plated meal or a stew, lovingly prepared by volunteers and made in cooperation with local kitchens and the Göttingen Table. Both are served with lard and marmalade sandwiches, fruit juices, and - of course - hot beverages such as tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. In this way about 25 to 60 people a day are provided with a proper meal. Besides the many volunteers responsible for most of the work, a professional social worker is also present, making it a welcoming place for ex-convicts, addicts, and the homeless. In order to continue this charitable tradition, the St. Michael needs to raise - through voluntary contributions only - fifty thousand euro a year. This semester the Theologisches Stift lends a hand and asks you to do the same by making a donation to make a meal a day again self-evident - for all people.
