Studying Euroculture at the University of Göttingen is far more than sitting in classrooms and spending time at the library!

Every semester Euroculture students go on a study trip to Hannover, where they visit the European Information Center, the Sprengel Museum, the State Parliament of Lower Saxony and, if time and weather allow, the Herrenhäuser Gärten. In the summer semester students face the challenge of organizing a project or a study trip within the framework of Eurocompetence II class.

Throughout the semester Euroculture students and their Buddies are actively involved in a number of Euroculture extra-curricular activities, such as culturals dinners, public lectures, Christmas get-together, sport events etc.

Eurocompetence II Projects from the past semesters


When Culture Meets
Designed and executed by Fleur Schellekens, Wanyu Yao, Weilei Zhu and Charlotte Culine

'When Culture Meets' was an international dinner for 50 people with different cultural backgrounds to share their culture through food and music. This idea was born out of our desire to promote the cultural exchange to strengthen the integration in Göttingen as Göttingen is increasingly becoming an international university town as well as a multicultural immigrant city.

The participants brought dishes from almost every continent to share and during the event we also had two music acts. These acts truly reflected the international audience of the event, as we had a local german singer-songwriter and a band playing Persian rock music with influences from Sri Lanka, Mexico and Germany. The diverse people, food and music have given all the audience a good opportunity to connect with each other. And many of them claimed they got to know more people and had fun during our event.

Gesprächscafé: “Migration moves Göttingen” an international students perspective

Gesprächscafé provided an interesting perspective on how Göttingen can understand and shape itself as a migrant society in the eyes of students coming to the town from all around the world, but predominantly from Europe. This event was organized as part of the project series UrbanLab: Migration moves Göttingen. The discussion addressed a fundamental question on “how do the students experience Göttingen?”.

The students discussed their first impression of Göttingen. The participants noted that Göttingen is a good place to study and do research due to its quiet and friendly atmosphere. It has an intercultural ambiance due to a presence of many different nationalities with different cultural backgrounds.

It has been concluded that Göttingen is a good place to study and focus on studying and despite difficulties. It is also a place to meet new people. Students can freely demonstrate their creativity and follow their personal choice.

Debate on Campus: Have Gender Workplace Policies Gone Too Far?

The project was to organize a campus debate on the issue of affirmative action policies in the workplace. In the true spirit of free academic discussion, the students aimed at taking a relevant political issue and engaging a frank and critical conversation with a young and politically diverse audience.

The debate itself started with a lecture by one of the team members, Andrea (also responsible for the promotional campaign and second judge), on women’s rights in Italy since the 19th century. It was then followed by a debate between Jelmer (project initiator) and Konrad Knatz, captain of the local Göttingen Debattierclub. Afterwards, we had a lively open discussion that was opened up to the room on the basis of our previous debate and lecture.

The project attracted a diverse audience of almost 20 people. They were distinct in terms of nationality, gender, age, and political alignment, which led to some very interesting conversations about how women in the workplace are perceived differently in different cultures. With this project, the team fulfilled the most important goal: organizing an independent event in the spirit of free and open academic discourse that allowed everyone to safely express their political opinions and to have them challenged.

FOLLOW-UP ON THE IP CAREER DAY

For the Eurocompetence II project management class the team created a follow-up on the IP career day which was held during the Euroculture Intensive Program. The aim of the project was to create a guideline for Euroculture students regarding future career opportunities and employment prospects.

We decided to create a series of videos, going over different themes on careers after Euroculture. In the past a proper follow-up on the IP career day has not been carried out. Experience has shown that more systematic approach was necessary so that the IP Career Day has more impact. The videos are structured in a logical sequence according to seven thematic categories. They are concise and informative and reflect all the important aspects of 2019 Euroculture IP career day. You can take a look at all the videos here.
