Discussions on sustainable corporate governance

First Responsible Innovation Summit at the Faculty of Business and Economics

Due to advancing digitalisation and climate change, the economy and society are increasingly confronted with changed framework conditions and the need for responsible and sustainable innovation. This affects society, politics, companies and private individuals alike and thus challenges us all to act together.

The Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Göttingen has therefore created the "Responsible Innovation Summit", a discussion forum to address the topic of innovative capacity from different perspectives. The summit is a conference supported by graduates of the University of Göttingen and the Faculty of Business and Economics and took place for the first time on 30 June 2022 in Göttingen.

"It makes sense to organise the conference together with alumni who are active in business and implement the knowledge gained at universities. I sincerely thank our alumni for their commitment to the faculty and for feeling connected to it," said President Prof. Dr. Metin Tolan in his opening speech.

After a brief welcome by the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, Prof. Dr. Matthias Schumann, Martin Zielke (former CEO of Commerzbank AG) and Dr. Mark Misselhorn (founder and CEO of Caphenia) gave keynote speeches and discussed "Corporate Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Leadership in Transformative Times" with the audience.

Martin Zielke spoke about the role of established companies in the face of current social and economic challenges. Mark Misselhorn addressed, among other things, the role of state intervention in the energy and mobility sector.

In lectures and workshops, members of management and boards of renowned companies also spoke about legal regulations for anchoring sustainability goals in the context of board remuneration for companies listed on the stock exchange, about sustainable careers, data-driven innovation and data- and AI-based marketing. The speakers also presented examples of entrepreneurial activities in African countries or gave tips for financing start-ups. The individual events were each conducted by an alumnus or alumna and a professor of the faculty.

At the final panel discussion in the afternoon, Dr. Hagen Duenbostel (Spokesman of the Board, KWS Saat SE), Thomas Lallinger (Chief Executive Financial and Entrepreneurial Risks, Munich RE) and Dr. Antje Stobbe (Head of Stewardship, Allianz Global Investors Sustainability Team) spoke on the topic of "Climate Change & Corporate Governance".

"This event would not have been possible without the great commitment of our former students. I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the speakers and the sponsors of the Summit," said Prof. Dr. Michael Wolff at the end of the event. Michael Wolff and his team from the Chair of Management and Control had been instrumental in organising the conference.

The conference aims to provide a platform for networking between representatives from business, students, alumni and the general public. The motto of "Responsible Innovation", i.e. the idea of enlightened, responsible innovation activity by economic actors (individuals or organisations), forms the overarching guiding principle of the Faculty of Business and Economics in research and teaching.

The event was kindly supported by KWS Saat SE and Ottobock SE & Co. KGaA.
