Margarete Vöhringer studied art history and media theory, philosophy and aesthetics as well as media art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG); guest student in art history and media studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin); simultaneously founded and directed the Berlin agency and gallery aroma-informationsdesign (1997-2001 together with Birgit Schneider and Andreas Eberlein); 2001-04 scholarship holder at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin; 2006 PhD in Art History at the HU Berlin with a second supervisor in the history of science; 2006-09 research associate at the Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung (ZfL) in various research projects, from 2011 head of the research area "Visual Knowledge"; simultaneously teaching assignments and substitute professorships at the Freie Universität Berlin, HU Berlin, Berlin University of the Arts, the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the University of Zurich; since 2017 Chair for "Materiality of Knowledge" at the University of Göttingen.
