Details Photocameras, kymographs, chronoscopes, ophtalmoscopes and stethoscopes are the prominent inhabitants of science and medical museums witnessing the emergence of experimental laboratories in the 19th Century. Represented as either physical artefacts or via images and texts, these objects were usually not the products of one original author but of a collective of people from different fields and institutions, even from different countries. The latter was especially the case with traded objects between Russia and Germany: Russian medical students worked in German laboratories where they collaborated on the development of instruments, introduced them to Russia and sent their own constructions back to Germany. Physicists, physiologists, chemists and psychologists from both countries traveled between Germany and Russia, carrying instruments with them as goods and representatives of their work. Though these individuals are recognized today for achievements in their individual fields, they are hardly seen as agents of material exchange. Which instruments, models and tissues were involved in the globalization of experimental sciences? How has the material part of the communication between German and Russian scientists helped to accelerate modernization as we experience it until today?
