Our team offers here an overview of calls for project proposals related to European research and innovation funding schemes. The calls for project proposals are listed chronologically according to their respective deadlines. The EU framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe (2021-2027), is the successor of Horizon 2020. Its calls include for example those of the European Research Council (ERC). You will find a link to the Funding & Tender Portal under each Horizon Europe call listed below. In this online portal, Horizon Europe project proposals are to be submitted and funded projects are managed here. You will find information on how to apply for Horizon Europe funding on the respective application websites of the EU Office (collaborative research, ERC).
The European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) also promote research and innovation. The most popular included among these are the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Territorial Co-operation (Interreg), the European Social Fund (ESF), and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD). You will find further information on specific ESIF calls below. Detailed information on how to apply for ESIF funding can be found on the ESIF application website of the EU Office.

The FutureFoodS partnership is co-funded by the EU Commission, within the EU framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe. Collectively the goals of the Farm to Fork strategy of the European Green Deal will be achieved aiming to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly. FutureFoodS Partnership published a transnational co-funded call on "Accelerating Food Sustainability - through Household Dietary Shifts, Trust and Transparency, and Innovations in Circular Food Processing Systems."

The following call topics are supported by German funding organisations:

  • Topic 1: Domestic food practices for enhancing sustainable and healthy diets — systemic work at the household level covering food safety, cultures, nutritional needs and consumer behaviour. (BMEL/ BLE)
  • Topic 2: Towards diverse, sustainable and circular food processing systems — improved processing/packaging, valorisation of by-products and side-streams, and compositions tailored to diverse consumer groups. (BMFTR/ PtJ)

Please read the Call Announcement thoroughly. It will ascertain that your planned project fits to the aim of this call. Please note that some topics may not be fundable by some national/ regional funding organisations. Therefore, please take a close look at the call document and its annexes, especially ANNEX I: National/ Regional regulations. In Germany, the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) and Project Management Jülich (PtJ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) participate in the call. German applicants are strongly recommended to contact their National Contact Persons before submitting a proposal. Projects must have a clear added value to the national funding programme.

The call follows a two-stage application procedure: pre-proposals (stage 1) and full proposals (stage 2). The deadline for submitting pre-proposals (stage 1) will expire on 11 February 2026. A webinar will be hosted on 11 December 2025 from 11:00 am to 13:00 CET for all interested applicants. The webinar will provide an overview of all relevant aspects of the call and a short introduction to the submission platform. The webinar is open to everyone interested and no registration is required.

The Agroecology Partnership, funded by Horizon Europe, unites the EU Commission and 72 partners across 26 Member States, Associated Countries, and Third Countries. It will support an agriculture sector that is fit to meet the targets and challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, food security and sovereignty, and the environment, while ensuring a profitable and attractive activity for farmers. Agroecology Partnership Partnership published a transnational co-funded call on "Fostering plant and animal genetic diversity and empowering farmers to accelerate the agroecological transition."

Research and innovation proposals are expected to address the call topics in a multi-actor approach that should be interactive, transdisciplinary, and to apply co-creation and co-implementation processes, using Living-Lab or Living-Lab-like approaches. The following call topics are supported by German funding organisations:

  • Topic 1: Enhancing the genetic diversity and variability of crops and livestock for the agroecological transition: Subtopic 1.3 and 1.5 are not eligible; Subtopic 1.4 is eligible, if German partners are not involved in any animal breeding aspects. (BMFTR/ PtJ)

Applicants requesting funding from BMFTR must in any case include the following statement in the proposal in the field “Relevance to Funders’ programme”: “Our tasks in the project will not address animal breeding nor any research addressing animals nor any technologies finding application in the field of animal breeding. Our tasks in the project address exclusively subtopic(s) 1.X (and 1.X)”.

Das Bundesregierung hat die Bekanntmachung für die dritte Phase des multilateralen Förderprogramms Eurostars veröffentlicht. Eurostars wird ko-finanziert von den nationalen Budgets der Eurostars-Mitgliedsstaaten und der EU-Kommission unter Horizon Europe (2021-2027). Es fördert grenzüberschreitende, bi- und multilaterale Forschungs- und Entwicklungsvorhaben, die der experimentellen Entwicklung zuzuordnen sind. Das Ergebnis der Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten muss grundsätzlich neuartig und die Zielerreichung muss ungewiss sein. Die Arbeiten erfordern einen wissenschaftlichen und systematischen Ansatz. Antragsberechtigt sind neben kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) auch Hochschulen und außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtungen, sofern sie mit mindestens einem KMU in Deutschland kooperieren. Eurostars ist für alle wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen offen.

The Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (JU) launched its call for proposals to support the creation of cutting-edge hydrogen technologies. It addresses key priorities identified by the Strategic Research Agenda within different areas of research and innovation, with direct and quantified impact towards the achievement of the objectives of the Clean Hydrogen JU. 21 call topics are available:

  • 6 topics – Renewable Hydrogen Production,
  • 4 topics – Hydrogen Storage and Distribution,
  • 4 topics – Transport,
  • 3 topics – Heat and Power,
  • 2 topics – Cross-cutting,
  • 2 topics – Hydrogen Valleys.

The topics are grouped into 4 Innovation Actions (IA), 15 Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) and 2 Coordination and Support Action (CSA). Synergies with other European partnerships and programmes, as well as with EU Member States and regional programmes are at the core of a number of topics. RAISE („Resource for AI Science in Europe“) wurde am 3. und 4. November 2025 auf dem AI in Science Summit in Kopenhagen offiziell gestartet. Als virtuelles Institut bündelt RAISE Talente, Daten, Rechenkapazitäten und Fördermittel, um wissenschaftliche Durchbrüche zu beschleunigen. Mit Fördermitteln in Höhe von 107 Mio. EUR aus Horizon Europe unterstützt RAISE die KI-Wissenschaft. RAISE ist Teil der Europäischen AI in Science Strategy, die u.a. auch Investitionen in KI verdoppeln und die Zusammenarbeit zwischen EU-Mitgliedstaaten stärken soll.

The European Innovation Council (EIC) published the EIC Pathfinder Open Call for collaborative and interdisciplinary research proposals. You should apply to this call if you are looking for support to realise an ambitious vision for radically new technology, with potential to create new markets and/or to address global challenges. It supports early stage development of such future technologies (e.g. various activities at low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1-4), based on high-risk/ high-gain science-towards-technology breakthrough research (including ‘deep-tech’). EIC Pathfinder Open may support your work, especially if it is highly risky: you may set out to try things that will not work; you may be faced with questions that nobody knows the answer to yet; you may realise that there are many aspects of the problem that you do not master. On the contrary, if the path you want to follow is incremental by nature or known, EIC Pathfinder Open will not support you. Before applying you should verify that your proposal meets all the following essential characteristics (‘Gatekeepers’):

  • Convincing long-term vision of a radically new technology that has the potential to have a transformative positive effect to our economy and society.
  • Concrete, novel and ambitious science-towards-technology breakthrough, providing advancement towards the envisioned technology.
  • High-risk/high-gain research approach and methodology, with concrete and plausible objectives.

COST ist eine durch Horizon Europe (2021-2027) geförderte zwischenstaatliche Initiative zur europäischen Vernetzung, die allen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen offen steht. COST Actions finanzieren u.a. die Organisation von Veranstaltungen, Training Schools, Publikationen und Short Scientific Exchanges. COST fördert nicht die Forschungsmaßnahmen selbst.

Die geförderten Netzwerke haben eine Laufzeit von vier Jahren. Das Besondere bereits bewilligter COST Actions liegt in der laufenden Aufnahme neuer Mitglieder. Sie können die COST-Datenbank der bereits bewilligten COST Actions nach für Sie relevanten Stichworten durchsuchen.

COST Actions bieten verschiedene Vorteile für Forschende wie z.B.:

  • Sie erleichtern Kontakte zu europäischen Partnern, woraus sich gemeinsame Vorhaben im Bereich Forschung und Innovation entwickeln können wie u.a. Publikationen oder Projektanträge.
  • Sie bieten vielfältige Möglichkeiten der Karriereentwicklung, was insbesondere für junge Wissenschaftler*innen nützlich sein kann.

Das Antragsverfahren für neue COST Actions ist themenoffen (Bottom-up-Prinzip) und einstufig angelegt.

With its Pathfinder programme the European Innovation Council (EIC) supports the exploration of bold ideas for radically new technologies. It welcomes the high-risk / high gain and interdisciplinary cutting-edge science collaborations that underpin technological breakthroughs. Pathfinder goes beyond what is already known. Visionary thinking can open up promising avenues towards powerful new technologies.

Applicants participating in EIC Pathfinder projects are typically visionary scientists and entrepreneurial researchers from universities, research organisations, start-ups, high-tech SMEs or industrial stakeholders interested in technological research and innovation.

Projects typically involve consortia of researchers and other partners from at least three different countries, but there are also opportunities for individual teams and small consortia (two partners).

The following Pathfinder Challenges were published:

Grants of up to 3 to 4 million euro support early stage development of future technologies (e.g. various activities at low Technology Readiness Levels 1-3), up to proof of concept. The EIC Info Day on Calls 2026 took place. Recordings are available online.

Die Ausschreibungsthemen der New European Bauhaus (NEB) Facility wurden veröffentlicht.

Die NEB ist Teil des EU-Rahmenprogramms für Forschung und Innovation, Horizon Europe. Es sollen Projekte gefördert werden, die die grüne Transformation mit sozialer Inklusion und lokaler Demokratie verbinden, kreislauforientierte und regenerative Ansätze für die gebaute Umwelt erforschen sowie innovative Finanzierungs- und Geschäftsmodelle für die Umgestaltung europäischer Nachbarschaften entwickeln. Gleichzeitig soll untersucht werden, wie kulturelle Teilhabe, soziale Beziehungen und bürgerschaftliches Engagement zusammenhängen.
