H5P in Teaching
H5P is a free platform for creating interactive online learning materials such as presentations, learning games, or self-paced tests. Currently, working with H5P is only possible within the learning management system ILIAS.
Why use H5P?
H5P includes many content formats that our Stud.IP or ILIAS do not cover, and enables content types in a more engaging form. If you need more variety for your current teaching or want to expand your materials with new formats, try H5P!
H5P is suitable for...
...creating digital learning activities through which knowledge can be conveyed, practiced, and tested. H5P content can be used, for example, for follow-up after in-person sessions. With formats such as Branching Scenario, Interactive Video, or Course Presentation, you can provide students with additional information and better illustrate covered content. In this way, the learning material can be deepened. With H5P, you can also ensure active preparation for your course. In this case, students independently acquire theoretical knowledge from the H5P content and apply it during the in-person session. With various task types such as Flashcards, Drag and Drop, or Question Set, you can continue to provide your target group with the opportunity to practice and test their acquired knowledge. Most question types are automatically evaluated, so you don't need to do any correction. Finally, you can use H5P during your in-person session to actively involve your students in working with the course material using interactive materials and quiz-like tasks.
What pitfalls should I be aware of?
Currently, some content formats (e.g., Questionnaire, Speak the Words, Essay) do not work properly and can thus be used only limitedly or not at all. Unfortunately, the user language of H5P is also not consistent in many cases. Depending on the content type, the instructions in the editing mode are either completely in German, completely in English, or mixed.
How do I create H5P content?
H5P content can be embedded within your ILIAS objects such as learning modules or exercises, or created as a separate object at the course level in ILIAS. We have prepared a learning module for you that provides an overview of the available H5P formats: for each H5P content, you will find a description with some application ideas as well as examples for implementation. Need an introduction to H5P or consultation on which H5P formats are suitable for achieving your learning objectives? Please contact the Digital Learning and Teaching Service. We are happy to advise you!
