Details

The master's programme in international economics concentrates on the acquisition of specialised knowledge of international markets and the global interconnections of national economies. High value is set on research-based teaching and demanding proficiency in analytical methods. Master's students have the opportunity of studying one semester at one of our partner universities for example in Europe, Russia, the U.S., Latin America, Africa, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, South Korea or China. Additional language courses can be chosen as electives to prepare students for this study-abroad programme.

Areas of study and research focus in Göttingen:
The master's degree programme in international economics provides students with greater in-depth subject-related and methodological knowledge to enable them to analyse the increasingly international cooperation of economies and thus reproduce and evaluate its impacts on domestic or foreign economic measurands. This focus means a comprehensive, thematically matched series of courses in the field of international economic relations within the master's degree programme. Whether concerned with micro and macro issues in development economics, multinational companies and organisations, international trade or experimental economic research, the large range of modules offered creates a solid methodological and factual basis to enable candidates to soundly analyse the current opportunities and risks of globalisation. Equipped with several professorships and an interdisciplinary research centre, the University of Göttingen, moreover, offers the largest area of focus on the areas of economic development research.

The degree programme is in German with an increasing number of English modules. Both German and English language skills are required. Students can choose from a broad range of electives or acquire knowledge in an additional foreign language (besides the required English), e.g. Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Arabic. Furthermore, a compulsory semester abroad fosters intercultural communication skills.

The teaching offering is also internationally structured: Guest lecturers from universiteis and research institutes all over the world present state-of-the-art courses on international economic issues. Exchange agreements with renowned universities in China, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Latin America and the U.S. provide multitudinous opportunities for the mandatory semester abroad. This additionally includes stays at about 60 European universities within the scope of ERASMUS partnerships.

The University of Göttingen thereby offers the best prerequisites to tackle the new challenges facing education in modern economics created by globalisation.

The Faculty of Business and Economics is offering a double degree programme with the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. In four semesters, specially qualified students can simultaneously earn the degree "M.Sc. in International Economics" from the University of Göttingen and the "M.Sc. in Economic Development and Globalization" from the University of Groningen.

In order to study in this double degree programme, students apply for the course of study "M.Sc. in International Economics" at the University of Göttingen and at the same time for participation in the double degree programme with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Netherlands. In this programme, students study two semesters in Göttingen and two semesters in Groningen. As a graduate of the double degree programme, you attain degrees in two accredited master's programmes from two renowned European universities that are both rich in tradition.

The double degree programme offers an excellent possibility to study internationally and opens up excellent career possibilities in multinational business, national and international organisations and, not least, excellent chances when applying to international Ph.D. programmes.

Graduates of the master's degree programme in international economics are equipped with a high level of methodological and factual knowledge coupled with their acquired language skills and intercultural skills. This opens up outstanding career perspectives, particularly at international and European organisations (for example IWF, World Bank, OECD, WTO, European Central Bank, EU Commission), at research institutes, institutions for development cooperation and in the private sector, particularly at associations, at management consultancies, in the financial sector or at internationally aligned companies. Get to know the different professional fields of our graduates in the alumni portraits (in German).

At the same time, a master's degree builds an excellent foundation for starting a doctoral degree programme at a domestic or foreign university.

Structure

The master's programme in international economics is four semesters in length during which 120 ECTS are completed. It is divided into coursework and the completion of a master's thesis. The credits are broken down into the following components: an in-depth economics section (24 credits), an economic specialisation section (48 credits), elective modules (24 credits) and a master's thesis (24 credits).

Students will intensify their comprehension of economic issues by either focusing on broad aspects of international economics or by specializing in one of four specific fields of interest:

  • International Trade and Production
  • Development Economics
  • Behavioral and Institutional Economics
  • Quantitative Methods of Economic Analysis
Students seeking to specialize in one of these fields must obtain 24 credits in modules that are related to this topic.

Students have to study abroad for one semester. This semester has to be spent at a partner university (see above) of the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Göttingen. Into the bargain, students can participate at the European exchange programme "Erasmus". Within this framework the faculty cooperates with more than 60 European universities.

Detailed information about the study programme as well as a detailed listing of the modules/courses offered can be found on the programme website of the Faculty of Business and Economics.
