Funding Success: New Research Training Group Established
Prof. Dr. Anja Jetschke, Professor of International Relations, is the spokesperson for the Research Training Group “China’s Geo-Economic Rise and the Construction of Structural Power” (China-GRASP), which has been approved for funding by the DFG. The project is carried out jointly with colleagues from the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Humanities—in collaboration with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy—and offers doctoral students the opportunity to pursue their doctorates within a structured research and training program. In Memoriam: Prof. Ran Hirschl
The Faculty of Social Sciences is deeply saddened by the passing of Prof. Ran Hirschl, PhD, who died on May 19, 2026, following a serious illness. Ran Hirschl was affiliated with the faculty from 2016 to 2021 as the Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Comparative Constitutional Studies at the Department of Political Science. He was regarded as one of the world’s leading scholars in the field of comparative constitutional studies. A detailed and comprehensive tribute to him has been written by colleagues at the University of Toronto, where Ran Hirschl most recently worked.(photo: University of Goettingen / Christoph Mischke)

Research funding

Dissertation defense and habilitation dates
Approximately 10 students complete their doctorates at the Faculty of Social Sciences each year, and 1-2 people obtain their habilitation. The dates of public university disputations and lectures can be found here.
