Christmas bakery 2015

BackenThe team of Foyer International cordially invited us to join them for a Christmas baking evening on Monday, November 30, 2015. Once we were inside, the lousy weather was soon forgotten, as the delicious smell of Glühweihn and hot punch filled the air. A youtube playlist of German Christmas songs completed the setting. The Foyer Crew had prepared four different "stations" for our baking adventure: Two tables for mixing dough, one table for cutting out the cookies and another table for cookie decorations. Small groups formed at the tables and soon we were all concentrating on reading recipes, weighing, cutting, mixing and looking for utensils and ingredients (some of them seemed to disappear all the time). Thanks to the considerate arrangement, the cookie cutter team was able to start right away with ready-made dough and the decorators already had a supply of baked cookies, so that nobody had to wait idly.

Backen There was a huge variety of cookie cutters and soon the trays were full of stars, hearts, moons, cows, snowflakes, angels and other forms that were sometimes hard to identify ("is that a chicken or a squirrel?"). We had three different recipes: Butterplätzchen (butter cookies), Zimtsterne (cinnamon biscuits) and Vanillekipferl (vanilla crescent biscuits). The latter two are usually always the same shape, stars for Zimtsterne ("cinnamon stars") and small crescent shapes for Vanillekipferl, but Butterplätzchen come in as many different shapes and sizes as one can think of. Also, they are sometimes used for Christmas tree decoration, which we did aswell with the Christmas tree at the entrance of Von-Siebold-Str. 2 - I wonder how long it will last!

BackenBacken The decoration team let their creativity run free: With colorful icing and sugar sprinkles, chocolate flakes and sugar beads they created very fancy patterns on the golden Butterplätzchen. The cocoa-browned cookies were decorated with less color but fine lines.
As the evening moved on, people took turns to find some Christmas music from their homecountries on youtube, so Arabian and Chinese tunes formed the background for even more intricate cookie decoration. Of course, some of the freshly baked goodies had to be tasted, too!

It was a great and fun evening with lots of great people, tasty cookies and some memorable baking experience. Thanks to everyone who was there and of course to the Foyer Crew for preparing everything!
