The number should therefore be indicated in later correspondences. Each application round requires a new registration and the upload of all application documents under the current registration number. Registration numbers from previous application rounds are invalid.
You need the password to access the upload portal after registering in the application process to complete the application with all the required documents and for the access to the additional data portal for the Master - Supplement in order to undertake the enrollment after having received a notification of acceptance. Therefore, please remember the password! If you have forgotten the password, you can reset it via the Master’s Application Portal of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

A “Transcript of Records” is a proof of performance of all course-related achievements up to date, that you have performed at a different university. If your university does not provide an official Transcript of Records, compile a list with all the classes (including modules) you have taken, listed with semester with credits and grades and have your university verify the list.

Please keep in mind that on your Transcript of Records the total number of achieved ECTS and the current average grade must be stated clearly.
The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is an instrument to secure transparency and quality of studies and courses of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating countries. For successfully completed achievements a set number of credits, based on study regulations and modules are awarded. The students are thereby collecting credits until the demanded number of credits is achieved; only then can the studies be concluded.

The Master degree programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences are consecutive study programmes. The word ‘consecutive’ derives from the Latin word consecutio, which means follow-up/ sequel. This term denotes a study programme, which consists of a Bachelor’s degree programme and a Master’s degree programme building up on each other. The Bachelor’s programme is a basal programme and the Master serves as a post gradual programme. There is a professional connection between the Bachelor’s and the Master’s programme; they build up on each other regarding content.
Therefore, there are admission requirements for the matriculation within a consecutive Master’s programme at the Faculty of Social Sciences. One such requirement is the professional relevance: This means that it will be reviewed whether the knowledge which you acquired during the Bachelor’s programme suffices the requirements of the consecutive Master’s degree programme. For more details on the requirements, please refer to the next box: "What are the requirements of admission for the consecutive Master’s study programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences and how is the professional relevance of the preliminary studies determined?"
The following requirements will have to be achieved before admission to the Master studies programme: Proof of preliminary studies with a minimum of 6 semesters and an amount of 180 ECTS in the same discipline as the intended Master studies programme (or in a related discipline). All students who have not yet finished their preliminary studies but have already acquired 150 ECTS in a respective studies programme are also eligible for application and admission. Assessment of the applicants’ qualification: For the assessment of the qualification of the applicants the selection committee has set professional requirements. The specific content of requirements for each subject can be found here: Table on the relevance of previous studies (PDF, German).
Up to 15 ECTS of professionally relevant modules can be compensated for during the first two semesters of the Master’s degree programme by way of a learning agreement.

All applicants are required to have sufficient knowledge of the German language (students studying Modern Indian Studies are exempt from this rule). The proof of a sufficient knowledge of German must be submitted no later than the date of matriculation: 30th September for the winter semester and 31st March for the summer semester.

Only concerning the students of the Master’s degree programme of Modern Indian Studies: Applicants whose native tongue is not English are required to have a sufficient knowledge of English. More information on language requirements can be found here.
No:
Only applicants having studied a pertinent or a related discipline in the extent of 180 ECTS during their preliminary studies by the beginning of their Master studies programme are eligible for application.
By the time of application (15th May / 15th November) applicants must have proof of having already acquired at least 150 ECTS. Applications with less than 150 ECTS will not be considered for admission.
Applicants applying for a Master’s studies programme (except Modern Indian Studies, see below):
  • whose native language is not German
  • who do not hold a German university degree

  • As proof of sufficient language competency applicants are asked to provide the “Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang” (DSH-2).
A DSH-certificate from a different university can only be accepted if the DSH-examination regulations of that university is registered with the HRK (“Hochschulrektorenkonferenz”) and your language competency corresponds with the required DSH-level. In case of uncertainty, the level can be asked to be proven via a language competency test.

Who can be exempt from a language competency test?
Applicants who have successfully completed the German competency test at a different university or a “Studienkolleg”, which is registered with the HRK, can be exempt from the test of German language competency. Those applicants who have acquired four times the level four within the DAF-test or have successfully passed the “Prüfungsteil Deutsch” of an assessment test at a Studienkolleg can also be exempt from further language competency testing. In case of more applicants applying, than there are university places available, interviews will be conducted. After an assessment of the aptitude for the different degree programmes, twice as many applicants than available university places will be invited to the interviews. Underlying that process is a list based on the graduation grades. The university places will then be distributed via a combination of the graduation grade and the results from the interviews. Beginning with the first place, based on that list, applicants will be admitted until all the available places are filled. More information can be found in the admission rules and regulations.

The regulations on the admission requirements and on admission of the different study programmes can be found on the university homepage Degree programmes from A to Z. The regulations are only available in German language.

Interviews are only conducted if there are more applicants fulfilling the requirements than there are places available for the concerning Master’s study programme. The selection process will then start the next round. After a first selection process twice as many applicants than available university places will be invited to the interviews with the selection committee. In case you are afflicted by that, you will be informed in time via E-mail including further information on duration and content of the interview.
Once the committee has reviewed your application you will receive an E-mail including a link to the result of the application process/ letter of admission/rejection. In case of a selection process having to take conducted for a Master’s studies programme you have applied to, you will receive further information via E-mail.
The decision whether a preliminary degree is proefessionally qualified (Table on the relevance of previous studies (German)) and related to the applied Master’s programme lies with the selection committee. The committee can make the relevance of previous studies dependent on a learning agreement, asking the applicant to provide academic performance which has not yet been accomplished (a maximum of 15 ECTS) within a certain amount of time (2 semesters). If you are admitted with a learning agreement, it lies in your responsibility to provide the agreed upon academic performance.

Detailed information on the matriculation procedure for your MA programme can be found here: Schritte zum Masterstudium nach der Zulassung (English version at the bottom of this page).

The Faculty of Social Sciences offers the possibility to study some of its Master degree programmes either as purely scientific modules or in combination with a legitimate module package from another comprising subject (equivalent to a subsidiary subject with the scope of 36 ECTS). There are no module packages available for the degree programmes “Labour in Society”, “Diversity Studies in the Social Sciences”, “Educational Science”, "Modern Indian Studies" and "Sport Science with emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and psycho-social health". An overview of all possible module package combinations of Master degree programmes and module packages can be found here.
Please keep in mind that the module packages are arranged for a start of programme in the winter semester for a duration of four semesters.

When selecting a module package please take into consideration the admission requirements (German). Attention: The admission to the module package “Economic and Social Psychology” is limited to 7 students of the Master degree programmes “Ethnologie", "Politikwissenschaft: Nationalstaat und Globalisierung" and “Soziologie”. If more students want to study the module package of “Economic and Social Psychology”, the spots will be selected by the final grade of the preliminary studies. If two students have the same grade there will be a drawing of lots. There is also a waiting list, so in case applicants drop out, other students can move up and receive one of the spots in the module package.
You can mark down your desired module package during the online registration. If you decide on a module package during the later stages of the application process or wish to change your module package, please let us know via E-mail. The Office of the Dean of Studies will file an application of admission with the respective compartment to be admitted to the module packages and will inform the applicants via E-mail subsequently.
Please let the Office of the Dean of Studies know whether you still plan to study the module package via E-mail. The information of admission will be forwarded to the Examination Office and a subsequent registration via FlexNow will follow.
If you are rejected from a module package you can either study the Master’s degree programme as a mere scientific discipline or select a different module package. If you want to select a different module package please check whether you can combine the desired module package with your Master’s degree programme and whether you fulfill the requirements.
A deselection and a shift to a pure scientific Master’s degree programme will have to be requested. To do so please send an E-mail to the Office of the Dean of studies.

Please contact the responsible academic advisor: Subject-specific Student Counselling.
