There is an option called "special treatment" where you can upload information about your refugee status. The contact person at the Institute of Computer Science is our student advisor.

Where do I find a study plan?

The degree programmes at the Institute of Computer Science offer many ways to personalise your studies. There is therefore no single default study plan for all students. Depending on your interests and prior knowledge, you need to create your own study plan and choose from various courses. Several criteria must of course be fulfilled. These are described in the module catalogue and will also be explained in the introductory lecture. Registered students should make an appointment for individual counselling if they need help with their study plan.

Structure of MSc programme

How do the studies in the MSc programme work?

The MSc programme Applied Computer Science requires 120 credit points (C) to be completed successfully. The standard period of study is four semesters, and the master's thesis is usually written in the fourth semester. Credits must be earned in different subject areas and, within these areas, in different groups of courses. The exact distribution varies by specialisation. For further information, please consult the module catalogue or contact the representative of your specialisation or our student advisors.

What is the amount of credit points I should collect each semester?

The master's programme requires 120 credit points and is designed for four semesters. On average, you should therefore complete around 30 C per semester.

Which courses should I take in the first semester?

At the beginning of the first semester, the student advisory service provides a list of courses that are suitable for first-semester students. These courses are recommendations, not mandatory requirements. In particular for students who are not yet familiar with the programme, some of them can be a useful starting point.

Is there any introductory course for new MSc students?

Yes. For new international MSc students we offer an introductory course on the first day of the lecture period. Participation is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended. In this session, you will receive an overview of the programme, meet the dean of studies and the student advisors, and have the opportunity to ask questions.

The introductory course is followed by a poster session at the Institute of Computer Science. Research groups and specialisation representatives present their courses and research, which gives you the opportunity to learn about specialisations, research topics, and possible supervisors. The poster session is open to all MSc students, so it is also a good chance to meet more advanced students. The student body also participates and can answer questions; their office is on floor -1.

How and when should I decide for a specialization?

This depends on your previous knowledge and your interests. An overview of the specialisations is available here. The poster session for MSc students at the beginning of each semester is a good opportunity to get to know the research groups. We recommend deciding on a specialisation by the beginning of the second semester at the latest.

Why do I need a study plan and how can I create it?

Every student needs a study plan to complete the degree successfully. The plan must be confirmed by the representative of the chosen specialisation or the supervisor (mentor), as well as by the student advisory service. We recommend preparing it by the beginning of the second semester at the latest.

Since the MSc programme offers many options, there is no universal default plan. Depending on your interests and previous knowledge, you need to create an individual study plan and choose from various courses. The relevant criteria are described in the module catalogue and are also explained in the introductory course. If you are unsure which specialisation to choose, starting with core computer science courses is recommended, because at least 30 C must be earned in this area. Registered students should make an appointment with our student advisors if they need support.

How can I change the specialization?

If you have completed only a few courses, changing the specialisation is usually straightforward: you can simply start taking courses from the new specialisation. However, you should adapt your study plan and discuss it with the student advisory service. The revised plan must also be approved by the representative of the new specialisation.

If you have already completed most of a specialisation, changing is usually not recommended, because courses from one specialisation often cannot be credited toward another. That may extend the duration of your studies. In any case, please contact our student advisors to discuss the available options.

Is there any opportunity to get to know the research groups of the institute of Computer Science?

Yes. Every semester, on the first Monday of the lecture period, there is a poster session for MSc students where the research groups introduce themselves.

How do I find a research project and/or a supervisor for my master thesis?

Each semester, on the first Monday of the lecture period, the Institute of Computer Science offers a poster session where research groups and specialisation representatives present their courses and research. This is a good opportunity to learn about research topics and get in touch with possible supervisors. The event is announced in UniVZ as "Introductory course Applied Computer Science (M.Sc.)."

You do not need to wait for the poster session to contact a potential supervisor. If you are interested in a research project in a particular group, you can also contact the respective person directly by email, during office hours, or after a lecture or seminar. Since many supervisors expect certain courses or seminars as preparation, it is advisable to get in touch early. We recommend choosing a specialisation and a supervisor by the beginning of the second semester at the latest.

I would like to write my master thesis. What are the next steps?

Please read the previous answer for information on finding a research project and a supervisor. Information on registration and submission of the thesis is available here under "Bachelor's and Master's Thesis". If you need further information, please contact our student advisors.
